Asthma and anaphylaxis action plans are covered properly, including how to use inhalers, spacers and autoinjectors. There’s also time spent on documenting what happened and talking to families afterwards. That part can feel awkward the first time you do it.

What you'll actually cover in the course

You’ll practise CPR on adults, kids and babies, using the correct compression depth and rate for each age group. You’ll use an AED, place someone into the recovery position and run through asthma and anaphylaxis responses with the correct devices.

Choking is covered with hands on practice, not just theory. You’ll also work through bleeding, burns, fractures and shock using childcare based examples rather than generic workplace cases.

It’s practical. You’re expected to get involved rather than just listen.

What happens in the practical assessment

There’s theory to complete first, usually online in your own time. The practical session is face to face at a Sydney venue.

CPR is a physical skill - there’s no version of that assessment that works properly over video. On the day, you’ll get down on the floor and practise on adult, child and infant manikins. We’ll run through scenarios and check you can perform the skills safely and in the right order.

You can complete the theory online - but you still need to attend a face to face practical assessment so an assessor can watch you do CPR and the other required skills. Every RTO delivers it that way.

  • a USI (Unique Student Identifier)
  • some sort of photo id
  • the ability to get down on the floor to do CPR
  • basic digital skills to complete the online theory

Most people in the industry reckon the full HLTAID012 qualification should be renewed every three years. CPR is refreshed every year though - so you’ll probably end up doing a short CPR update in between.
