HLTAID014 provide advanced first aid is a course under the Australian Qualifications Framework, and it's been approved by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). This course is for people who need to give advanced first aid at work or in their community - and it's a whole lot more than just basic first aid. You'll do practical tasks, written work and emergency scenarios, and all of this is about giving you the skills and knowledge to manage complex emergencies, and to lead other first aiders until help arrives.
HLTAID014 vs HLTAID011 - What's the Difference?
These two are both national recognised first aid courses, but they cover very different ground.
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid
HLTAID014 Provide First Aid goes much further, and it covers things like clinical assessments of vital signs, and airway management, spinal injury management, triage for multiple casualty incidents, and leading a coordinated first aid response. The word "advanced" refers to the depth , not the difficulty, of the topics explored – you don't need a medical background. If you genuinely want to be ready to handle serious emergencies, not just tick the box , this first aid course in Sydney is the one to take.
What Does the Advanced First Aid Course Cover?

Advanced Resuscitation
You get to practice CPR on a non-breathing adult and a non-breathing baby - training is done with adult and baby manikins and you also learn how to use a soft bag to resuscitate someone and how to use an AED.

- Non-life threatening bleeding
- Burns and fractures
- Spinal injuries
- Ear injuries
- Getting someone out of a heatwave and minor wounds
Multiple Casualty Incidents and Triage
You learn the basics of triage for multiple casualty incidents - how to assess, prioritise and run aid activities for several people at once. This is a key skill for high risk workplaces, public events and complex emergency situations.

The course covers first aid procedures for a range of medical emergencies
- Anaphylaxis and asthma
- Heart problems and strokes
- Seizures and diabetic problems
- Mental health problems
- People who have been hurt by drugs and booze
You get to do some practical assessments to check you know how to use all this equipment.
Incident Management and Coordination

Passing the Theory — What to Expect
People sometimes get caught out by how much content there is to cover in HLTAID014 - especially when you've got the blended learning option where you do a bit of online training first, then head out for the face-to-face session.
Heres what helps:
- Focus on the core bits: DRSABCD, AVPU, primary and secondary assessment, and a bit of basic triage
- Don't try to memorise everything beforehand - it all starts to make a lot more sense when you actually get your hands dirty with the practical stuff
- Assessments are done in a real-scenario way, they're not just about what you can recite off the top of your head
- They also bring trainers who are actually current or former paramedics to the table, so you get real-world experience - that's got to be a good thing right?
Performance evidence is gathered through practical demonstrations and scenario role plays - not some boring old exams.
