What Is HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid?

HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid is the current nationally-recognised unit of competency for advanced first aid training in Australia - approved by the Australian Qualifications Framework and the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

Just a note for people searching for HLTAID006: HLTAID006 Provide Advanced First Aid is no longer the go - HLTAID014 is the current code and the one recognised by employers, WorkSafe ACT, and SafeWork Australia. If you got certified under HLTAID006, it's time to update to the current course. This course is for people who are in need of giving advanced first aid at work or in the community. It takes the basics of first aid and genuinely goes way beyond them. You'll put in the time to complete practical tasks, write some assessments, and face real-life emergency scenarios - and come out with the skills and knowledge to handle the tough stuff, and be able to lead other first aiders until the medics or other help arrives.

Evidence of what you've achieved is gathered through stuff like running through the practicals, getting through scenario-based exercises, and writing some written exams.

HLTAID014 vs HLTAID011 - Whats the Real Difference Here?

Both of these are nationally recognised first aid courses. However, the content in them is as different as chalk and cheese.

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

HLTAID011 Provide first aid courses are the standard first aid certificate most workplaces need. It covers the basics:

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) - which is about as basic as you get
  • Automated external defibrillator (AED) use - this is getting a bit more involved but is still pretty straightforward
  • Common injuries and illnesses
  • How to deal with a casualty until emergency services turn up

It's the minimum first aid requirement for most general workplaces, and is suitable for low to medium-risk workplaces.

HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid

But then there is HLTAID014. This advanced first aid course is a whole different ball game. It covers:

  • Clinical assessments and vital signs - getting into the nitty-gritty of assessing a casualty
  • Advanced resuscitation techniques - this isn't just CPR, this is serious stuff
  • Oxygen therapy and airway management - not just a bit of first aid, this is advanced medical stuff
  • Spinal injury management
  • Triage for multiple casualty incidents - making tough decisions in high-pressure situations
  • Leading a coordinated first aid response

The term "advanced" is just a fancy way of saying the content is a lot more in-depth. Don't be put off if you're not a medical expert - you don't need to be a doctor to learn this stuff.

If you really want to be prepared for serious emergencies - not just tick a box to say you've done the first aid course - then this is the course for you.

What Does the Advanced First Aid Course Cover?

The HLTAID014 training course covers a lot of ground - two days of hands-on training that will leave you feeling solid.

Assessment and Clinical Skills

You get to learn how to do a primary and secondary assessment of a casualty. This means you'll be taking and recording vital signs like pulse, blood pressure, respiration, temperature, and consciousness levels. This is the foundation of good decision-making in emergencies.

Advanced Resuscitation

Practically, you'll learn how to do CPR on a non-breathing adult and a non-breathing infant. You'll be using real-life training equipment and getting hands-on experience with soft bag resuscitation and AED operation. And you'll learn how to give oxygen too.

Airway Management

You'll learn to use some of the more advanced first aid equipment like oropharyngeal airways and suction equipment to keep an airway open and safe in an unconscious casualty.

Trauma and Wound Management

First aid procedures for trauma include stuff like:

  • Life-threatening bleeding - you'll learn how to use a tourniquet and pack a wound
  • Non-life-threatening bleeding
  • Burns and fractures
  • Spinal injuries
  • Ear injuries
  • Hyperthermia and minor wounds

Multiple Casualty Incidents and Triage

In this course, you'll learn about triage for multiple casualty incidents - how to assess, prioritise and deal with several casualties at once. This is super useful for big public events, complex emergency situations and just about any major workplace with a big number of staff.

Medical Emergencies

You'll learn to spot and manage a whole range of medical emergencies:

  • Anaphylaxis and asthma
  • Cardiac events and stroke
  • Seizures and diabetic emergencies
  • Mental health crises
  • Casualties who have been affected by illicit drugs and booze

You'll learn to identify the warning signs and what to do next.

Incident Management and Coordination

And you'll learn to lead a first aid team - coordinating others, talking to emergency services, writing incident reports and even managing the stress that comes with dealing with emergencies.

Who Needs Advanced First Aid Training in Canberra?

HLTAID014 is the right course for a whole range of jobs and roles across community and workplace settings in Canberra and the ACT.

Government Departments and APS Teams

Take Canberra's biggest employer - the federal government - most departments, agencies and bodies require designated workplace first aiders who are trained to HLTAID014 standard. For big government buildings and offices, and facilities with a lot of staff, this is the qualification they need.

Defence and Government Contractors

And then there are defence and government contractors - they also need staff who are trained to HLTAID014.Canberra has a significant defence and government contracting sector. Loads of contract roles – especially those requiring on-site access, security clearances or having WHS obligations linked to government contracts – specify HLTAID014 as a condition of employment or site induction. You'll be seeing more and more jobs requiring this qualification before taking on a new contract – it's becoming de facto standard practice.

Construction and Infrastructure Workers

Canberra is buzzing with construction activity in Civic, Gungahlin, Woden and along major infrastructure corridors. Guys working on commercial builds, civil infrastructure, and residential projects are at real risk of injuries every day. Under ACT WHS legislation, HLTAID014 is the recommended advanced first aid course for designated first aiders on high-risk construction sites.

Workplace First Aid Officers

ACT's First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice makes clear that employers must assess workplace risks and provide suitable trained first aiders. In bigger workforces or high-risk operations – from Civic office blocks to Fyshwick industrial areas – HLTAID014 is the go, not HLTAID011.

Security Personnel

Security staff at shopping centres, government buildings, and public spaces across Civic, Braddon, and the wider ACT regularly come across medical emergencies. Advanced first aid training is increasingly becoming the norm for licensed security professionals in the territory.

Schools, Education, and Childcare

Teachers, ANU and UC student workers, camp leaders and childcare staff with HLTAID014 can confidently manage medical emergencies involving kids, toddlers and family members – including infant resuscitation, anaphylaxis and multiple casualty incidents in education and outdoor settings. First aid certification is a common requirement for education placements and childcare roles across ACT.

Hospitality and Events Workers

Canberra's Braddon restaurants, Civic hotels, National Convention Centre events, and big public gatherings around Commonwealth Park and Lake Burley Griffin generate a real need for hospitality and events staff with advanced first aid skills. Being able to confidently manage a serious incident until the ambulance arrives is a practical expectation for front-of-house teams in high-traffic venues.

Community Sport and Recreation

Canberra has a strong community sport culture going on with AFL, rugby, football and outdoor recreation. Club first aiders, coaches and officials with HLTAID014 are better equipped to handle serious injuries and medical emergencies at training sessions, matches and community events.

Aged Care and Community Services Workers

Canberra's aged care, disability support and community services sector requires workers with strong first aid capability. HLTAID014 gives care sector workers the clinical assessment and emergency management skills to handle complex medical situations in residential and community settings.

Course Format, Duration and Prerequisites

  • Do some practical demos on an infant resuscitation manikin

Passing the Theory - What to Expect

The amount of stuff you need to learn for the HLTAID014 course can be a bit daunting - especially when you're doing the theory in a blended learning format and you've got to cram it all in before your face-to-face session.

Here are a few tips to help:

  • Focus on the core skills - DRSABCD, AVPU, primary and secondary assessment, and basic triage - that's the main game.
  • Don't try and memorise everything - it all makes a lot more sense when you get to the hands-on part.
  • Assessments are scenario based - so it's not just about what you know, but what you can do in the real world.
  • The trainers we've got in our Canberra network have all got real-world experience - many of them are still working as paramedics or have backgrounds in emergency services or Government sector safety.

We don't do academic exams here, by the way - what we do is get you doing practical demonstrations and scenario role plays to check you've got the skills and knowledge.

Yep - the ACT's First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice says that employers need to make sure they've got suitable trained first aiders on staff.
