Aquatic venues pose risks which can be very serious and life threatening. Patrons can be put in danger for many reasons and can quickly require urgent rescue. It is imperative that anyone acting in a lifesaving role quickly activates emergency systems and strategies for group control to maintain the safety of everyone in major aquatic emergencies.  This requires extensive training and practice.

Participants in this course will gain the skills and knowledge required to identify, evaluate and respond to aquatic emergencies using established advanced rescue procedures. Training will cover the requirements for effective and appropriate communication, safely assessing a casualty, using equipment and techniques during rescue situations and organising further care. Participants will also report incidents, maintaining confidentiality.

Training is performed according to accepted best practice principles of aquatic rescues, first aid, relevant legislation and organisational policies.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 7 Hours
Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 8 Hours

This course has pre-requisite units of:

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
  • SISCAQU002 Perform basic water rescues
  • Any individual undertaking the course will be required to provide a copy of their current Certificate or Statement of Attainment prior to training taking place.

This course has physical requirements

  • Rescue of a live person acting as a casualty, individually and as part of a team. 
  • Resuscitation on a manikin on the ground.
  • A fitness test requires that a student must also be able to swim 200 metres in under 6 minutes and able to swim 25 metres to a casualty, tow them 25 metres and remove them from the water with assistance from others students in under 1 minute and 45 seconds.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Practical scenarios:

  • Perform a non-contact tow of a conscious swimmer and after care
  • Perform a contact tow of a conscious swimmer and after care
  • Perform a contact tow rescue on an unconscious swimmer and after care 

Performance tasks:

  • Complete a 25m swim and 25m non-contact tow in less than 1 minute 45 seconds
  • Perform spinal immobilisation, stabilisation and removal of a suspected spinal injury casualty in shallow water    
  • Perform spinal immobilisation, stabilisation and removal of a suspected spinal injury casualty in deep water
  • Swim 200m in less than 6 minutes
  • Retrieve an object from the deepest water within the aquatic environment (greater than 3m can use fins)

Documentation: Completion of 3 x site-based incident reporting forms.

Theory assessment: A written exam consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions must be completed at the end of the training session. Students must answer all questions.
